Different Types of Media

The different types of media industries.

  • Publishing (novels, books etc.) - The publishing industry gives us a wide range of word based media such as; books, novels and comics/graphic novels.
  • Magazines - Magazines cover pretty much everything, from fiction to non-fiction as well as news, media products, reviews, sport, music, film and many more.
  • Newspapers - Much like magazines newspapers cover just about everything as well, it just depends on what area and what it may specialise in or the type of news paper it is, such as a tabloid newspaper will cover more about sport and gossip where as a broadsheet newspaper will cover more politics and art based news.
  • Animation - Animation nowadays is a much more broad form of media than it once was. Back in the day it was considered rather childish and only for children but now it is used for all ages and sometimes specifically for adults. The ways it is made have also evolved into different formats such as 3D animation and claymation.
  • Film - This is probably the most expensive and most money making form of media, it can also be the most expressive form of media. It is form of media that has evolved so much since it was first invented and still continues to as well, with a wide array of genres (action, comedy, horror, thriller etc.) and many different ways of portraying it (animation, cohesive, expression ate etc.) it is a form of media that will continue to grow and challenge the way we say things.
  • Television - Television programs can be anything from non-fiction (documentaries, reality contests, news and game shows) and fiction (drama, comedy series and cartoons).
  • Web 2.0 - Originally the web was just used for simple things like e-mail but now there are tons of things such as news sites, video streaming sites, websites where you can write your opinion on anything and anyone can read it.
  • Music - Music is a very expansive media tool that can be used in just about anything from film, animation, television, the Internet and even inside shops. In some ways it is it's own advertisement but doesn't mean in makes the most money. If anything since the Internet it has become quite difficult for musicians and record labels to make much money from music due to illegal downloading.
  • Radio - Radio is a great tool bringing all kinds of media together and different shows which specialise in those certain types. Such as examples as Mark Kermode's film reviews on BBC radio 5 which have increased in popularity over the years and BBC and XFM's studio sessions with bands of different genres.
  • Video Games - Video games have seriously blown up in the last few years and probably make as big a buzz as major film releases. Not only that but they have also evolved so much with the introduction of online gaming and downloadable content the video games. It's actually one of the few media industries that's still thriving and hasn't been effected by the Internet.
  • Facilities - These are what all the media products are made by. examples: books would be a publishing company, animation would be computers and software,
